LIITO-ontologia kehitetiin erillishankkeena Sanastokeskus TSK:n, YritysSuomi.fi:n ja alan toimijoista muodostetun konsortion toimesta yhteistyössä FinnONTO-hankkeen kanssa.
LIITO julkaisiin pilottivaiheessa kansallisessa ONKI-ontologiapalvelussa ja on nykyisin saatavilla ONKI:sta tuotteistetusta Kansalliskirjaston Finto-palvelussa.
