Reflections on the MultimediaN E-culture project: applications & evaluations<\/p>\n

In the period from 2005 to 2009 the Dutch national MultimediaN E- culture project explored how Semantic Web technologies could be\u00a0 deployed to virtually interlink Dutch museum collections and their vocabularies. The goals were similar to those of the MuseoSuomi work\u00a0 done here.\u00a0 I will give a brief overview of the work done, and compare\u00a0 our approach with that of MuseoSuomi.\u00a0 In the talk, I will demonstrate\u00a0 some of the applications developed, and focus on the cooperation with\u00a0 the musea involved and the design of the applications’ evaluations.\u00a0 These evaluations will be used as concrete use cases to discuss the difficulties of evaluating Semantic Web applications in general.\u00a0 The talk will conclude with a brief preview of the Semantic Web work currently carried out in the context of the Europeana project.<\/p>\n
Jacco van Ossenbruggen is a senior researcher with the Interactive Information Access group at CWI and affiliated as an assistant\u00a0 professor with the Web & Media group at VU University in Amsterdam. He\u00a0 is currently active in the Dutch national Agora project and the\u00a0 European PrestoPrime and EuropeanaConnect projects.\u00a0 His research\u00a0 interests include the design of user interfaces for rich heterogenous\u00a0 data sources.
